It may have been a miserable Friday morning, but it would have taken more than some rain to dampen the enthusiasm of the pupils of St. Anthony’s as they celebrated the official opening of their RECO BOX which has been funded by the National Lottery.
The pupils were joined with our Deputy Lord Mayor Margaret Tinsley, Councillor Declan Mc Alinden, Councillor Thomas Larkham, Martina Monaghan from Lars Playwho supplied the RECO BOX, Mrs Claire Mc Conville (World Around Co-ordinator at St Anthony’s), Mr Patrick Mallon (St. Anthony’s principal) and Mrs Helen Hamill (St. Anthony’s Vice Principal)
The RECO BOX will be used as an outdoor learning facility, encouraging the pupils to investigate nature. With the school pond close by, students will have the opportunity to carry out pond dipping activities in comfort.
The roof has been planted with a selection of plants to encourage insects and the insect hotels will provide them with a habitat.
There are a number of cameras on the roof which allow the children to watch the insects, identify birds feeding at the bird feeder and a camera in a bird box so the children can watch birds build a nest and hatch chicks.
Mrs Helen Hamill, Vice Principal in St. Anthony’s is delighted with the new facilities.
“This is an amazing resource for our school. We are one of the first schools in this area to avail of this outdoor learning facility. The children are so excited, the possibilities and opportunities this resource provides us for teaching across the curriculum are endless!”
